Members of a Cross Country team can earn a variety of awards depending on how well they do at meets. As individuals, they can earn medals for placing in the upper ranks of those they are racing against. Some meets award as many as half of the competitors while others may only award the top 10 regardless of how many were entered. As a team, the individual top 5 finish places are added together for all teams with five to seven runners. The lower the score the better. Awards for top team finishes vary from plaques, trophies, and/or medals. Typically, they are awarded to the top one to three teams per division.
Another way student-athletes are awarded is with Varsity or provisional letters. Varsity letters can be sewn onto a letter jacket and any medals earned at a meet can be affixed, also.
Finally, the coach awards student-athletes at the end-of-season banquet. Banquet awards include Team Captains, #1 Runners, Rookies of the Year, Most Improved Runner, Inspiration (formerly, Heart and Hustle), and Team Spirit. Other awards student-athletes may earn include qualifications as All-Conference (medalist), All-District (medalist) who also qualifies for State, and All-State (medalist). In addition, excellent grades will be recognized as Academic All-Conference, etc.
